I designed and built a fully interactive replica of the motion tracker from Alien: Isolationfor a client. Rather than simply reproducing the prop's appearance, I engineered a self-contained electronic system with animated tracker graphics, physical controls, synchronized sound effects, a functional clock, and an automatic cinematic startup sequence.

Electronics Architecture

The system is powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W connected to a 4-inch Waveshare display, while a Seeed XIAO ESP32-C6 processes two rotary encoders and communicates user inputs to the Pi over USB serial. A dedicated audio module controls the boot, idle, and tracking sound effects, and the electronics are powered by an internal rechargeable battery system.

  • Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W + 4-inch Waveshare display for the animated interface
  • Seeed XIAO ESP32-C6 reading two rotary encoders and sending inputs over USB serial
  • Dedicated audio module for boot, idle, and tracking effects
  • Internal rechargeable battery system for self-contained power

Software & Interaction

I developed the software to launch automatically at startup, manage the different operating modes, play seamless video transitions, and correctly orient the interface within the handheld enclosure.

The completed tracker can switch between idle, simulated tracking, clock, and settings modes while responding to its physical controls with coordinated visuals and audio.

CAD Redesign

I also redesigned the supplied 3D model to properly house the display, controls, speaker, battery, charging hardware, and modular wiring — turning a visual prop model into packaging that could actually carry a working electromechanical system.
